What is Africa's plains game all about?

Hunting in Africa for the first time can be overwhelming. This page is designed to provide you with all the essential information you need to know about plains game hunting in Africa, helping you navigate every aspect of the experience.

Hunting makes you new friends every day

In Africa, all animals are considered potentially dangerous. However, when we refer to "dangerous," it doesn’t necessarily mean life-threatening or that the animals will attack. Plains game, often classified as "non-dangerous," are animals that can be hunted in Africa without the extreme risks associated with larger species.

The term "non-dangerous" primarily refers to the various antelope species found across Africa. These antelope are further categorized into groups such as "common" plains game, exotics, and other classifications based on size, shape, and color.

When hunting plains game, various rifle calibers can be used depending on the size of the animal, similar to other hunting destinations. It’s essential to discuss with your outfitter the appropriate caliber for each animal to ensure a safe and successful hunt.

Placing Plains game into categories

"common" Plains Game.

Warthog hunting

Plains Game typically refers to the more common antelope species, but this is not entirely accurate. Not all plains game are easy to find or abundant, and this is often how they are categorized and priced.

"Common plains game" refers to animals that are more widely distributed, making them generally more affordable to hunt. This category includes species like Impala, Blesbok, Blue Wildebeest, Zebra, and others. For more details, please visit our Animal Info page.

Exotic Plains Game.

Exotic plains game refers to animals that are rarer or considered special, often due to unique color variations or their elusive nature.

When we speak of exotic plains game in Africa, we’re referring to species that have earned a reputation for being truly remarkable to encounter. As a result, the cost of hunting these animals is typically higher compared to more "common" plains game.

Exotic animals include species such as the Sable Antelope, Roan Antelope, and Tsessebe, as well as color variants like Black Impala, Golden Wildebeest, and Golden Gemsbok, among others.

Tiny Ten

Springbok Slam

The South African Spiral Horn Slam is a prestigious collection of antelope found primarily in the bushveld, consisting of the Kudu, Nyala, Bushbuck, and Eland. These species are grouped together due to a common feature: their horns, which all have a distinctive spiral shape that runs from the base to the tip. Many hunters consider the Spiral Horn collection to be the most beautiful of all, admired for the elegance and symmetry of their horns.

The Tiny Ten collection is made up of Africa’s smallest antelope species—true miniature marvels of the wild. This group includes the Grey Duiker, Red Duiker, Blue Duiker, Steenbok, Cape Greysbok, Sharpe's Greysbok, Oribi, Suni, Damara Dik-Dik, and Klipspringer. While the term "tiny" may suggest ease, hunters should know that these elusive animals are far from simple to hunt. In fact, many consider the Tiny Ten to be more challenging to pursue than even the Big Five.

The Springbok is South Africa's national antelope, known for its breathtaking beauty. Found primarily in the grasslands of the country, the Springbok comes in four stunning color variants: Common, Black, Copper, and White. These make for an impressive collection of mounts. Fun fact: At the moment of death, the Springbok releases an aroma reminiscent of cotton candy.

The Reedbuck Collection is truly unique, featuring mountain antelope found across South Africa.
